need help to convert a GPS-Tracker output to XML

Jens-Jørgen Rask

Hi Guys,

I have tried to find out HOW to convert a text fromat obtained from a GPS-Tracker into GPX format …

The thing is I found another program  that can convert the txt file a GPX file online – BUT I would like the program to run on windows and NOT on the net – that’s why I tried GPSBABEL

However I cannot get the result I want .. Can Anybody help ??? I have attached a sample of a text file that needs to be converted into GPX  …

Re: need help to convert a GPS-Tracker output to XML

Jens-Jørgen Rask

Ok,

The input IS indeed NMEA 183 sentences – but reading that protocol tells me that speed is measured in Knots – Converting it to GPX (using GPSbabel)  there is no way I can change this into KM/h … Am I right ???

Re: need help to convert a GPS-Tracker output to XML

tsteven4-2
most of your sample lines have bad checksums and get thrown out.

there is one line with a good checksum and a non-zero speed:
$GPRMC,082103.000,A,5550.3408,N,01232.3083,E,0.48,358.45,041215,,,A*66
0.48knots -> 0.247m/s

speed is not part of the gpx 1.1 standard, but it was in gpx 1.0.  Although not documented in the gpx 1.0 schema it is documented here http://www.topografix.com/gpx_manual.asp that speed is in m/s.  The conversion from knots to m/s is done by gpsbabel.

Re: need help to convert a GPS-Tracker output to XML

tsteven4-2
your times in your gpx file are wrong by one hour.  the nmea times are in utc.  This might be some bug we fixed.  What version of gpsbabel are you running?

14.07m/s => 50.65km/h

i did notice my times are different than yours by one hour which is a bit of a mystery.  we sometimes have problems with local time and utc, but I don't think our timezones differ by one hour.  I am in UTC-07:00.

there are still lots of incorrect checksums that results in fewer points in your gpx file than in your nmea input.
