Garmin device compatibility

Robert Kernstock
Hi,
I have used GPSBabel to convert FIT files from a EDGE800 device so far, works perfect.
After switching to EDGE1000, I get the message „bad field size in data message“.
Seems that Garmin does not produce the same data structure across their devices. Any idea?
Enclosed are the files.

This appears to be fixed but not released.  I agree it is broken in 1.5.2.  If you can build your own code you can use the fix before the next release.

Where to clone the source from (was: Re: Garmin device compatibility)

The GPSBabel documentation at

   https://www.gpsbabel.org/htmldoc-development/Source.html

suggests to use

   http://gpsbabel.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/gpsbabel

to access the SVN  source repository,  while the page  provided above by
Steve suggests to use

   http://gpsbabel.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/

as source address.   Finally my (admittedly  rather  vague) knowledge of
SVN tells me that I would also receive the "tags" and "branches" direct-
ories of the source repository when just using

   http://gpsbabel.googlecode.com/svn/

Can anybody shed some light on this  and tell us  what address really to
use for accessing the GPABabel source repository?

Sincerely,
  Rainer

Re: Where to clone the source from

The svn repo is a tree, and the addresses pull at different levels of
the tree.  The one you want is very likely to be

http://gpsbabel.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/gpsbabel

The trunk/tags/branches layout is a common repository layout.  See http://svnbook.red-bean.com/en/1.7/svn-book.html#svn.branchmerge.maint.layout
We tag releases, so you could get the source for 1.5.2 with
http://gpsbabel.googlecode.com/svn/tags/gpsbabel_1_5_2/gpsbabel

Re: Where to clone the source from

Robert Lipe-4
We (I) control very few aspects of https://code.google.com/p/gpsbabel/source/checkout  The URL given in our doc and repeated by Steve are "better" in that they won't give you separate copies of every branch and every release we've ever made.

This problem will somewhat take care of itself (more accurately, I'll have to deal with it) as googlecode goes away.  It becomes read-only next month.  http://google-opensource.blogspot.com/2015/03/farewell-to-google-code.html

At this point, it's about 95% certain that we'll go to github.   The 5% is me wondering if I want to administer my own SVN/Git/Web service to do this just to quit getting jerked around by companies doing it for free, but without an attention span to keep it going sensibly.  Being burned by both SourceForge and Google Code, the "fool me twice" lesson may apply.

Just in case you haven't heard of it, GitLab is a self-hostable github
clone.  https://about.gitlab.com/  I've had no trouble with it for my
low key use of it, but not really a heavy user so can't strongly
endorse it, just mentioning it because it seems to be the (only?) answer
to the question "can I run my own instance of GitHub".

Cheers -Terry
